"The six-year war between forces loyal to Sudan's government and rebels in Darfur has effectively ended, the UN's military commander in the region says. General Martin Agwai, who is leaving his post this week, said the vicious fighting of earlier years had subsided as rebel groups split into factions. He says the region now suffers more from low-level disputes and banditry. The UN says 300,000 people have died in Darfur, but the Sudanese government puts the figure at 10,000. Almost three million people are said to have been displaced by the fighting."

"On August 25, NPR's Audie Cornish reported that the House Democrats' health care reform proposal "is estimated to cost a trillion dollars over the next 10 years," without noting that the Congressional Budget Office has concluded that this cost would be largely offset by the savings and revenue increases in the bill. Taking these provisions into account, CBO estimated that the House bill would increase the deficit by $239 billion over 10 years, less than a quarter of the cost Cornish reported."

"Ted Kennedy had his flaws, but they remained separate from his political career. Richard Nixon's flaws basically defined his entire political career. That's why it's tacky-bordering-on-offensive to dwell too much on Kennedy's personal failings in the wake of his death, and it was tacky-bordering-on-offensive to fail to mention Nixon's. (This is also, by the way, why the Clinton and Nixon impeachments are not equivalent. Clinton was impeached for personal mistakes that did not affect his performance of his job. Nixon was impeached precisely because of what he did on the job.)"

In fact, Hannity distorted the CRS quote; and the bills under consideration do prohibit undocumented immigrants from receiving subsidies to purchase health insurance."

"The AP reports that Republicans who opposed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, commonly referred to as the stimulus, are nonetheless vigorously pursuing money from the program. Many GOP members, like Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-KY), are still slamming the stimulus as waste and a failure, yet at the same time are making internal appeals for more funds. Guthrie, attacked the Recovery Act for its “staggering” costs just days before he urged Defense Secretary Robert Gates to consider using stimulus money to renovate a military hospital in his congressional district." "The number of problem US banks rose to the highest level in 15 years between April and June, the industry's regulator has revealed. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) said 416 banks had failed its test criteria during the quarter, up 111 from January to March. It added that 81 US banks had now been forced to close this year. The FDIC judges banks on criteria such as the quality of their outstanding loans and the reserve funds they hold."
